Jim Strachan has been operating Lions tour programmes for fans since 1977 and therefore has considerable knowledge of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

He even arranged a trip to Paris for the first and only time the British & Irish Lions played in Europe. The game was against France at the old Parc des Princes in 1989 to celebrate the Bicentennial celebration of the French Revolution! He said “It was a memorable experience. The night before the game I was fortunate to have dinner with Ian McGeechan, the Lions coach and Ray Williams from the WRU. After several bottles of Cahors wine – and with the help of salt and pepper pots and a few glasses, Ian carefully explained how the combination of Rob Andrew and Robert Jones was going to win the match. He was right – the Lions won 29-27”.

Jim also speaks enthusiastically about his three previous British & Irish Lions tours to South Africa – 1980, 1997 and 2009, plus the several Wales tours he has organized, including the last one in 2014. He also remembers the honour of being appointed as the exclusive Official Travel Agent for the momentous Rugby World Cup in South Africa in 1995. Jim and his team opened up an office in South Africa and were responsible for the travel arrangements of all the teams, referees and officials. “I remember flying down to Cape Town from Johannesburg for the Final alongside Keith Rowlands, the Rugby World Cup Chief Executive with the Webb Ellis trophy in its box between us – what an experience!”

Over the years Jim has established close relationships with hotels, coach companies, rugby clubs and match stadia in South Africa – and especially with his local agents – who have worked with him for over 20 years. “Nobody knows South Africa for rugby tours better than me and my team” says Jim. “We have a top quality British & Irish Lions tour programme to South Africa in 2021 and hopefully with the virus well behind us by then, everybody will have a wonderful time. However don’t delay, some of the tours are already full, so get booking with us now so you can say I WAS THERE!
